Sterile dark fungi were shown to colonize young barley roots rapidly and to persist on the roots with increasing age. b. Studies on comparative growth rate in sterile soil and isolations from roots grown in mixed inocula indicated that these fungi were poor competitors with Fusarium oxysporum. Direct observation, however, showed that sterile dark fungi were able to colonize barley roots in competition with significant populations of F. oxysporum.
