A study was made of the length, obliqueness of the end wall and nature of the perforation plate of late metaxylem vessels of genotypes belonging to the genera Erianthus, N arenga, Saccharum and Sclerostachya. Genotypes within a genus showed significant variation in both the length and perforation plate characters and, on the basis of these variations, species could be classified into primitive and advanced forms and information on the origin of polyploids obtained.
