Studies on magnesium in ruminant nutrition. 8. Effect of increased intakes of potassium and water on the metabolism of magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and calcium in sheep

Daily supplements of 0 or 27-28 g K, with 0 or 7-5 litres of water, were given to each of eight fistulated wether sheep on a hay and concentrate diet; faeces were collected for the last 4 days of, and urine throughout, 10-day treatment periods. Adding K to the diet decreased the urinary excretion of Mg by 33% and increased that of P, Na and Ca by 98, 76 and 150%, respectively. Faecal excretion of Mg and K increased, whereas that of P decreased.
