Ten fatty acids detected in paddy soils were mainly formic, acetic, butyric, lactic and succinic acids. Seedling root-elongation tests showed that among aliphatic mono-basic acids inhibition increased with increasing number of C atoms in the acid. In water or soil culture with acetic acid added, rice seedlings showed marked reduction in growth and in P, K and Si absorption.
