Results of a 4-year programme of pruning trials on bearing Passe Crassane pear trees demonstrated the great effect of pruning on this variety. Young 2- or 3-year-old fruiting branches only cropped well if their vigourous terminal shoot was cut back in March, at the bud-swelling stage, and it was also advisable to remove 25-50% (depending on their vigour) of the spurs and brindilles.
