Studies on shark liver oil. 3. Use of alcohol for the preparation of vitamin A concentrate from the oils of high acidity

Studies on shark liver oil. 3. Use of alcohol for the preparation of vitamin A concentrate from the oils of high acidity

Pakistan J. Sci. Indust. Res, 8: 68-70

Crude shark liver oil obtained in Karachi contained 5000 to 8000 I.U. vitamin A per g and 1.2% free fatty acids as oleic acid; it was dark brown and had a rancid smell. A 500-g sample with 7000 I.U. per g was shaken with 500 ml ethanol at room temperature; the residual oil contained 6000 I.U. vitamin A and only 0.15% free fatty acids per g and could be used for medicinal purposes.
