The effects of 21 respiratory inhibitors on the breaking of seed-dormancy in Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola were investigated. The terminal oxidase inhibitors KCN, NaCN, 8-hydroxyquinoline and HgCl2 all stimulated the breaking of dormancy; 2, 4-D and hydroquinone had a slight effect but NaN3, malonic acid and salicylic acid had no effect. Results indicated that inhibition of ascorbic-acid oxidase is the critical factor in dormancy-breaking in this species.
