Studies on the effect of gibberellic acid on some endogenous growth regulators of tobacco

The effects of gibberellic acid (GA) treatment on the ethanol-extractable growth regulators of Resistant Havana 211 tobacco plants were studied. Growth activity was measured by the Avena coleoptile elongation test on portions of chromatograms of tissue extracts. At least part of the increase in growth-promoting activity obtained from GA-treated plants was caused by residual GA in the tissues. The GA treatment also caused the disappearance of an endogenous acidic inhibitor of indolacetic acid activity. The effect of GA on growth processes is discussed in the light of its effect on this inhibitor.
