Leaves of tobacco Burley Mito 3 (20% moisture content) were fermented in chambers at (a) 30 degrees , (b) 40 degrees or (c) 50 degrees C at 82% r.h. DM fell by 9-10% in (a) and (b) and by 8% in (c). Total N fell gradually at all temperatures, and the decrease in soluble N was in the order (a)>(b)>(c). Total alkaloid content decreased throughout fermentation, while total-volatile-base content increased during the first 60 days and then decreased.
