Co had a beneficial effect on the growth of T. subterraneum whether the plants were nodulated or not; the effect was largely independent of the effectiveness of the rhizobial symbiont used. In effectively nodulated plants, an increase in the supply of combined N reduced nodulation (in grammes/g root) and also haem content of the nodules.
