The unfavourable effect of cold on cucumber seeds in the soil became apparent after a certain stage was reached in the activation of metabolic and growth processes, prior to visually discernible germination. Emergence in non-treated seeds was depressed more than in fungicide-treated seeds, particularly at 14 degrees C, indicating that this depression was due not only to low temperature but also to a pathogenic microflora.
