The effect of the growth retardant succinic acid 2,2-dimethyl-hydrazide (Alar) on fruit development in sweet cherries

Alar at 1 000 or 2 000 p.p.m. was sprayed one week after the end of flowering on 25-year-old trees of the cvs Zweitfruhe and Grosse Spate. The treatments promoted fruit pigment synthesis and sugar formation and increased the flesh: stone weight ratio by 10-20%. The treated fruits were larger and heavier although the stone mass remained the same as that of untreated fruits.
