One half of a standard 8-unit overhead pipeline milker was modified, by 'choking' the squeeze phase of pulsation, so that it milked more slowly; the slow-milking section thus differed from the control section only with respect to the action of the teatcup liners. After a 7-wk preliminary period, 32 cows were divided into 2 equal groups and assigned to the 2 machine systems.
