The formation of the abscission layer and its relationship to fruit drop and fruit development in sweet cherries

The formation of the abscission layer and its relationship to fruit drop and fruit development in sweet cherries

Angew. Bot, 41: 194-209. bibl. 29

The formation of the abscission layer was studied during 2 seasons in the cherry varieties Schneiders Spate Knorpel and Schwarze Barons, both of which show considerable fruit drop. Cell division occurred at the beginning of the abscission process, and the dividing cells underwent typical changes. The cell walls were thinner, and the cells were slightly deformed and tended to become detached from one another.
