The influence of temperature and nitrogen on growth as well as nodule formation and nitrogen fixation of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and red clover (Trifolium pratense L.)

In growth-chamber experiments lucerne was grown at 26 degrees day/21 degrees C night and 18 degrees /14 degrees and given N at 0, 1.2, 2.4 and 3.6 g/pot. Nodule dry weight decreased with increases in temperature and N in both sand and soil. In another experiment outdoors, lucerne and red clover were grown in uncooled and water-cooled pots.
