Abstract
BC2 plants from the cross of the amphidiploid N. debneyi x N. tabacum () with N. tabacum were without exception male sterile and the back-cross population comprised plants having varying degrees of floral anomalies, which were classified into 24 main types. Male sterility was transmitted to the BC3 and BC4 by the maternal cytoplasm and was uninfluenced by the recurrent tobacco pollen parent, no instance of restored fertility being observed.
