The nutritional requirements of grasshoppers. 2. Effects of plant phospholipids and extracts of bran on growth, development, and survival of the grasshoppers, Melanoplus bivittatus (Say) and Camnula pellucida (Scudder)

The nutritional requirements of grasshoppers. 2. Effects of plant phospholipids and extracts of bran on growth, development, and survival of the grasshoppers, Melanoplus bivittatus (Say) and Camnula pellucida (Scudder)

Canad. J. Zool, 42: 23-38

Groups of 20 nymphs of M. bivittatus and Camnula pellucida had the diet of part 1 with 10 mg per g diet of wheat germ oil or its neutral lipid or phospholipid fraction, or lecithins. Others had lettuce and bran. M. bivittatus grew not significantly better with neutral lipids than with other diets. Malformed wings occurred only with the basal diet. Other additives tended to retard growth and did not affect survival.
