Abstract
Tirs vary in depth, colour, structure and texture. Colour, although predominantly dark, appears independent of total organic-C content. Texture is clayey, with 25-30% of a fraction > 2 micro. Structure is made up of crumbs over prisms in the upper, and polyhedra in the lower horizons, resulting from alternating wet and dry periods on a plastic, swelling clay.
