Tryptophan utilization by rumen microorganisms in vitro

A sample of rumen micro-organisms, from a cow before feeding on grass and lucerne hay, was placed in an artificial rumen. In one experiment 100 mg DL-tryptophan and 0.5 micro Ci tryptophan-14C in 20 ml McDougall's solution (Abst. 4444, Vol. 18) were added, in other experiments 0.5 or 10 micro Ci labelled tryptophan alone were added with the McDougall's solution. Rumen liquor contained 36 micro g tryptophan per ml.
