Utilization of urea by sheep. 1. Rates of breakdown of urea and carbohydrates in vivo and in vitro

In sheep given urea and carbohydrates directly into the rumen the rate of disappearance of glucose was 2 to 3 times that of starch. In an artificial rumen breakdown by strained rumen fluid differed markedly from that in vivo because large numbers of starchand glucose-utilising micro-organisms were removed by straining while the urea-splitting organisms became more concentrated.
