In experiments involving Large Black x Russian Large White and Estonian Bacon x Russian Large White matings, the weight gain of lean/kg total gain was higher at all ages up to 7 mth in the progeny of bacon-type dams than in those from meat-lard-type dams (404 v 371 g, P< 0.05, at 4-7 mths of age). In progeny of bacon-type dams, thyroid activity was higher for a longer period than in progeny of meat-lard-type dams.
