In humus-rich soil in a reduced state, physiological root activity tended to be greater in the Japanese variety Norm 29 than in the Korean variety Nong-kwang, but, at ear formation, root activity was much greater in Nongkwang than in Norin 29. The formation of silicified epidermal cells in the leaves tended to be affected more by the reduced state of soil than by its content of available Si. Spikelet degeneration, which was greater in Norin 29, was also attributed to the reduced state.
