The results are presented of trials at the Tobacco Research Station, Riwaka, of 8 newly introduced tobacco vars. for resistance to V. dahliae in 1965-66 and of 10 vars. and 4 breeding lines in 1966-67. Most of the genetic variance in 4 of the vars. appeared to be controlled by additive factors. The high resistance of a biotype of McNairs 121 was conditioned by polygenes. In the field-tolerant var.
