In E. Germany plum vars. and clones grown for seed material are heavily infected (Brompton, Huttner 35/V/8 and Red Wing almost totally) with cherry ringspot viruses. Cherry necrotic ringspot virus was isolated from most affected trees. Cherry chlorotic and cherry necrotic ringspot viruses were seed-borne to the extent of 1.4 and 0.2 % respectively, and both were also found in pollen of infected trees. Natural spread of these viruses in plum seed tree orchards was not observed.
