Negro mothers and white mothers in the USA were studied in separate groups. Negro mothers tended to have significantly higher weights before pregnancy than white mothers. The birthweights of negro babies tended to be lower than those of white babies. The mean weight gains during pregnancy were for the Negro mothers 22.5 lb and for the white mothers 22-8 lb.
