Wheel-track injury in growing cereal crops

Wheel-track injury in growing cereal crops

Vaxt-Nar.-Nytt. 2, 18-20

Wheel-track injury caused during top-dressing was investigated in a spring wheat crop on a moderately heavy clay soil in Uppland province, Sweden. Driving through the crop 2 weeks after emergence did not adversely affect plant growth, yields or grain quality, and the resultant soil compaction improved soil physical condition; the same treatment at heading, however, resulted in sprouting in the ears with a fall in grain yields and 1000-grain weight and an increase in grain moisture.
