Yield and nutrient uptake by corn (Zea mays L.) for silage on two soil types as influenced by fertilizer, plant population and hybrids

In 1962, on a well-drained soil without irrigation, the short hybrid, Coker 67, responded to fertilizer, but the tall hybrid, Dixie 18, did not. In 1963 and '64, 5 hybrids were grown under favourable moisture conditions at 4 rates of NPK (up to 600 + 176 + 500 lb)/ac, respectively, and at 3 plant densities up to 39, 000/ac. Multi-eared hybrids yielded more forage than single-eared ones, but tall hybrids did not always yield more than short ones.
