Yields, compositions, and nutritive evaluation of barley silages at three stages of maturity for lactating cows

Yields, compositions, and nutritive evaluation of barley silages at three stages of maturity for lactating cows

J. Dairy Sci 51: 1801-1805

Five varieties of barley were harvested for silage during 1964 and 1965 at bloom, milk or dough stage of maturity when they had 22.0, 36.3 and 46.6% dry matter (DM), respectively. Yield of DM increased only moderately beyond the milk stage. Heads accounted for 45.5% of the DM of the plant at the dough stage, and crude fibre content decreased with maturity in both heads and total plant. N-free extract increased and protein changedverylittlewith maturity.
