The historian is a prophet in reverse.

The historian is a prophet in reverse.

Review of palaeobotany and palynology 64(1-4): 5-11

Catastrophic events occur frequently and are well documented in the fossil record. They have played a major role in determining evolutionary trends and are largely responsible for present-day vegetation patterns. The ecological insights arising from the study of changes in vegetation following burial by volcanic ash, changes in grazing pressure and the introduction of parasites to communities and the like are important for predicting the future behaviour of the biosphere. The same insights may be applied to interpreting the fossil record.
