The current status of conventional insecticide use against stored products pests in India is discussed. Prior to 1954, DDT and BHC [HCH] were used as grain protectants, but gradually malathion was adopted as a prophylactic spray at 50 mg/msuperscript 2. However, during continuous use, doses were enhanced up to 150 mg/msuperscript 2 to meet the level of effective kill. Toxicity data against various stages of 13 insect pests involving 17 insecticides and 3 formulations, and their persistence on 6 surfaces and 3 different types of seeds were used to evolve a strategy for future development of a prophlactic treatment. Larvae of the dermestid Trogoderma granarium and adults of the tenebrionid Tribolium castaneum, the bostrichid Rhyzopertha dominica, the bruchid Callosobruchus maculatus, the anobiid Lasioderma serricorne, the curculionid Sitophilus oryzae and the pyralids Ephestia cautella and Corcyra cephalonica were least susceptible to most of the insecticides. Etrimfos and deltamethrin were judged to be superior for large-scale use especially as wettable powders and to be suitable for sub-tropical conditions. Information is provided on insecticides currently used against stored products pests in India, methods of grain storage at the rural and organized level and various constraints faced in the developing countries.
