Deltamethrin is a broad spectrum and widely used pyrethroid insecticide, with a well-known toxicological profile, but whose non-target impact in tropical ant assemblages has yet to be investigated. The recent expansion of no-tillage cultivation of maize fields in Brazil associated with the frequent need of insecticide use against the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)) provides an opportunity to correct this deficiency since deltamethrin is one of the main compounds used for this insect-pest control. The ant assemblage was assessed using pitfall traps in conventional and no-tillage maize fields sprayed or not with deltamethrin. Sampling was carried out before and after the insecticide spraying throughout the crop cycle. Among the 49 ant species collected, there were significant differences among treatments with the cultivation system showing higher impact on the ant assemblages than the insecticide spraying. Further analysis considering the time effect reinforced such result, but indicated that the trend was determined mainly by a single species - Mycocepurus smithi Forel, which exhibited lower abundance under the no-tillage cultivation and was more drastically affected by deltamethrin spraying. The differences observed in the other species were comparatively negligible suggesting that insecticide impact on soil arthropods in tropical fields can be lower than expected and the cultivation system imposes more drastic effects than the insecticide spraying under such conditions.
