Effect of different levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on growth and yield of multicut fodder sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) (COFS 29)

A field experiment was conducted during 2002-2003 to study the effect of different levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on growth and yield of fodder sorghum (COFS 29) in order to optimize the NPK nutrient schedule for a multicut variety. The results revealed that among different treatment combinations, application of 90 : 40 : 40 kg N, P-2 O-5 registered the maximum plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of leaves/plant, leaf length, leaf width and leaf stem ratio in 9 cuttings. The data on green fodder yield showed that application of 90:40:40 kg N, P2O5 and K2O ha(-1) was found to be superior by registering higher green fodder yield (333.4 t ha(-1)) and dry fodder yield (64.0 t ha(-1)) in 9 cuttings. However, application of higher dose of N beyond 90 kg N ha(-1) had no effect on fodder yield.
