Effect of soil leachates on the release and motility of zoospores of Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands

Axenically produced sporangia of Phytophthora cinnamomi were incubated in sterilized and non-sterilized leachates prepared from a laterite soil, from jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) forest leaf litter and from two soils suppressive to root rot caused by P.cinnamomi. Zoospore release in laterite soil leachates was similar to that in the distilled water controls, but was markedly reduced in leachates from jarrah leaf litter and the two suppressive soils. There were no differences between the effects of sterilized and non-sterilized leachates on zoospore release. The rate of decline in zoospore motility was similar in all soil leachates to that in the control. Results suggest the presence of a chemical inhibitor to zoospore release in jarrah forest leaf litter and in suppressive soils which does not affect zoospore motility. This inhibitor appears to be absent from laterite soils.
