Estimates of genetic parameters and genetic gain for reproductive traits in the herd of Polish Landrace sows for the period of 25 years of the breeding work

Evaluation of the 25-year breeding work on PL sows (n=4816) from 1973-1999 and the line PL-23 (n=925) from 1984-1999, maintained in a closed pig herd in Pukarzow in Poland, was conducted. Data sets were analysed using restricted maximum likelihood programs. The estimated heritability (h2) was low for PL sows, being 0.023 for the number of live piglet births (NBA); 0.027 for the number of piglets on the 21st day (NW21) and 0.030 for litter weight (LW21).
