Farm size, tenure, and economic efficiency in a sample of Illinois grain farms: comment

Farm size, tenure, and economic efficiency in a sample of Illinois grain farms: comment

American journal of agricultural economics 66(4): 515-516

Garcia, Sonka and Yoo [see WAERSA 24, 4372] presented a useful framework for analyzing differences in economic efficiency for Illinois cash grain farms. Two structural dimensions were investigated: size of operation and degree to which the land input is owned by the farm operator. However, several mistakes were made in the specification of the profit function and the application of the share equations derived from that function. The misspecification affects the empirical estimates because the equations were estimated as a system and incorrect cross-equation restrictions were imposed on those estimates. Application of the share equations to test for size and pricing efficiency violates a basic a priori assumption of the procedure as used in the paper. These issues are treated separately in the discussion.
