Frequency characteristics of the auditory receptors of the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer (Orthoptera, Gryllidae)

The responses of single auditory receptors to sound stimuli were recorded by capillary microelectrodes in the leg nerve of G. bimaculatus. Three main groups of fibers were found: low frequency (optimum at 4-5 kHz); high frequency (optimum at 16 kHz) and cells with peak sensitivities at 4-5 and 12 or 14-16 kHz. The 1st group was divided into subgroups A and B. Possible localization of these receptors in the tympanal organ is discussed.
