SEEDS of three different maize hybrids were irradiated with 50 krad dose of gamma rays and infected with Ustilago maydis at seedling stage. The three irradiated maize hybrids showed variable degree of resistance against U. maydis. The results revealed that gamma rays enhanced the resistance against U. maydis. SDS-PAGE analysis of total proteins revealed ten variable protein bands among a total of 33 bands. Gamma radiation showed their effects on the infected maize hybrids, whereas some protein bands disappeared from the infected samples, while they were existing either in the control or under 50 Kr dose of gamma ray. Electrophoretic analysis of four enzymes; EST, PRX, ACP and ALK displayed the effects of U. maydis infection on some profile bands, whereas the bands of irradiation of maize disappeared, while they appeared in both of the control (infected) and the infected-irradiated samples. On the other hand, gamma radiation effects could be noticed, whereas some bands appeared only under gamma radiation and not under fungal infection. In addition, some newly induced bands appeared in the irradiated samples, as well as when combining the radiation and infection, but not detected in the two controls. Such induced bands may be involved to enhance the maize hybrids resistance against fungal infection, as a consequence of preferred mutants induced by gamma radiation.
