Matrix metalloproteinases -2 and -9 in pig luteal tissue angiogenesis and angioregression

The study was conducted to determine the temporal expression pattern of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 throughout the lifespan of corpus luteum (CL) and its relationship with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEFG) on 21 prepubertal gilts. Results revealed the presence of gelatinolytic activities of MMP-2 and -9 and VEGF protein in CL collected during oestrous cycle and pregnancy. MMP-2 were at basal levels during CL formation and pregnancy, but increased during luteolysis.
