Motility of the diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum

The pattern and speed of locomotion of oval cells in Phaeodactylum tricornutum were observed and analysed. The diatom usually left a clear, straight or slightly curved track on the surface of an agar gel plate containing culture medium. Cells tended to move on the tracks previously left by themselves or by other cells. The average speed of locomotion on a virgin surface was about 0.8 m/min, while the speed on a previous track was at least twice as fast. Locomotion near immobile cells and in colonies is also described, and the mechanism of locomotion is discussed.
