Postpartum anoestrus can be defined as the time period in the immediate postpartum period when cows do not show behavioural oestrus or ovulate. This anoestrous period is variable and will be longer in beef suckler cows than in dairy cows. However, ovarian activity as measured by the emergence, selection and dominance of follicles resumes within 10 days of calving in both beef and dairy cows.
