The chironomid community (Diptera: Chironomidae) in a southern Ontario stream and the annual emergence patterns of common species

The chironomid community (Diptera: Chironomidae) in a southern Ontario stream and the annual emergence patterns of common species

Archiv fuer Hydrobiologie, 992: 221-253

The chironomid community structure and the emergence patterns in a cool, headwater, wooded stream was investigated with emergence traps. Sixty-two species were identified, 10 of them new not described . The annual emergence patterns of the 28 common species are discussed, and the annual emergence rates, sex ratios and percentages of community and of total emergences are calculated. Emergence phases and length of emergence periods are presented. Common species are grouped into mono-, di- or tri-phasic species. The chironomid community is compared with that of other tropical and other temperature streams, and the effects of temperature and other temperature streams, and the effects of temperature and other parameters discussed.
