Tolerance au froid chez la tomate (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.). Etude comparee du developpement du gametophyte male et du sporophyte

A comparative analysis of cold tolerance of the male gametophyte and the sporophyte has been undertaken on four varieties of tomato. The seed germination rate and the growth rate of the young plants have been assessed at sporophytic stage, after a stress exposition of variable duration to a constant temperature of 4 degrees C. The pollen germination rate and the tube growth have been recorded at the gametophytic stage under the same cold stress. The sporophyte data analysis showed that the four varieties differed significantly between themselves with or without stress application for both their seed germination rate and their post-germinative growth. The Saint-Pierre variety appeared as the most tolerant and the variety Marmande as the least tolerant. In contrary, data on pollen grain indicate that the relative degree of tolerance of each variety changed with treatement duration and the trait analysed. These results showed that differences observed between varieties for germination rate and post-germinative growth rate under low temperature are partially reflected at the gametophytic level.
