Ultrastructure of a peripheral nerve of Locusta migratoria migratorioides R. & F. (Orthoptera: Locustidae)

The locust crural nerve is completely surrounded by an extra-cellular neural lamella of collagen fibrils in a mucopolysaccharide matrix. The lamella lies directly on a layer of perineurial cells sited between the lamella and the glial cell layer. The perineurial layer sends deep extensions into the nerve in the large-axon area. In addition to the lamella, an outer cell layer is also present. This layer is quite distinct from the neural fat-body sheath present in some insects and is directly applied to the lamella. This layer is more typical of lower arthropods, and most probably serves as a storage tissue.
