Copper toxicity to the fresh water snail, Lymnaea luteola

Tabulated results are presented from experiments to determine the effect of copper (as copper sulphate) on some lipolytic enzymes in the freshwater pulmonate snail, L. luteola. Exposure to copper increased the activity of tri- and diglyceride acylhydrolases and phospholipase, with corresponding reductions in the glycerides and phospholipids, and increased the concentration of free fatty acids. The possible mechanisms involved are considered. The increase in free fatty acids through increased lipase activity could aid in complexing copper for storage or detoxification.
