Effect of age at exposure and the exposure-test interval on the preferential behaviour of Oreochromis mossambicus fry to maternal models

Effect of age at exposure and the exposure-test interval on the preferential behaviour of Oreochromis mossambicus fry to maternal models

Animal Behaviour 42.4: 688-690

Studies of imprinting and early social bond formation have been notoriously sensitive to experimental perturbations and difficult to repeat. My aim was to examine two possible sources of variation: age at exposure and exposure-test interval. I examined these two variables for their effect on the responsiveness of fry of the African, mouth-brooding cichlid, Oreochromis mossambicus , to maternal models. More specifically, I varied these two factors under experimental conditions that had previously failed to elicit consistent preferential behaviour toward maternal models by the fry.
