Effectiveness of iron amino acid chelate on the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adolescents

Ferrous iron (120 mg, 60 mg, or 30 mg) chelated to amino acids and FeSO4 (120 mg) were compared for effectiveness in treating iron deficiency anemia in 100 adolescents. All groups additionally received 250 µg folic acid. The tablets used were all of identical appearance. All treatments raised hemoglobin levels by 2.4 to 2.9 g/dl. Ferritin increases from both 120 mg iron sources and the 60 mg of iron chelate were significant. Gastric distress for the 120 mg dose of iron chelate was <50% that of FeSO4. For 60 and 30 mg chelate doses, complaints were 9.5% and 0%, respectively. Based on hemoglobin levels, 30 mg of iron per day from the chelate were absorbed four times more efficiently than the 120 mg doses and permitted recovery from iron deficiency anemia within four weeks. The results with the 30 mg/day chelated iron dose suggest that an effect similar to that of the 60 mg/day dose could be obtained by increasing the treatment duration of the 30 mg dose to 6 to 8 weeks.
