Inheritance of lactic acid dehydrogenase in Melanoplus sanguinipes (F.) (Orthoptera: Acrididae)

The results of a genetic analysis of lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH) isozyme patterns in the migratory grasshopper, M. sanguinipes (F.) are reported. Reciprocal crosses between individuals having electrophoretically (single banded) fast and slow forms of LDH produce hybrids which show 5 electrophoretic bands. Presumably, the enzyme in this insect is a tetramer. Standard intercrosses and backcrosses reveal that LDH is inherited as a single autosomal gene with codominant slow and fast alleles. Two-point test crosses involving the marker, tibia color, give data suggestive of either independent assortment or loose linkage.
