Coastal bitumen in southern Australia, with special reference to observations at Geltwood beach, south-east South Australia

The coastal bitumen is believed to be a seepage product whose ultimate source is in Tertiary and Cretaceous marine sediments at depth, which wedge in from the continental shelf. Seepage is considered to have taken place along deep-seated fractures and/or faults. The significance of the bitumens in the Tertiary and Mesozoic shelf section, and the increasing abundance of the surficial material immediately following periods of active earthquakes in 1898, 1915, and 1948 are discussed.
