A simple inversion of 1D magnetotelluric sounding curve; Bostick inversion method and its application

A new inversion method used in the interpretation of magnetotelluric sounding data is recommended. This method, called the Bostick inversion method, is different from common curve fitting. It does not need an initial model and repeated iteration. This method is based on the premise that the intersecting point of two asymptotes of the corresponding low frequency curves can represent the average resistivity over depth H, but is not related to the electric character of the bottom bed. The first derivative of the H-curve obtained with inversion is calculated to yield extremums, which are the intersecting points of asymptotes. We can see from the examples given that this method is fast, convenient and quite accurate.
