SE MAPS in Georgia; strategies and currently developed geologic sites in coastal Georgia, the Atlanta metropolitan area, and Pine Mountain

SE MAPS in Georgia; strategies and currently developed geologic sites in coastal Georgia, the Atlanta metropolitan area, and Pine Mountain

Abstracts with Programs - Geological Society of America 32(7): 348

The Southeastern Maps and Aerial Photographic Systems (SE MAPS) project in Georgia is part of an eight-state NSF-funded curriculum project that uses satellite and airborne imagery and aerial photography, topographic maps, and other special-purpose cartographic products such as geologic maps. These materials allow middle and high school students to visualize geologic relationships and relate them to other disciplines. Student and teacher manuals contain site-specific background information and sets of minds-on interdisciplinary activities keyed to the national and state science standards. The Georgia Coastal Corridor study area features a satellite image of the entire coast and emphasizes the geological history, present-day geological processes and biological complexity of the coastal plain and sea island environments. Three topics are emphasized in the Atlanta area: urban sprawl, Stone Mountain, and Soapstone Ridge. A color infrared satellite image and a topographic map of the greater Atlanta metropolitan area are used to demonstrate the growth of the city along major transportation routes. Black and white orthophotoquads and topographic maps illustrate the granitic exfoliation dome of Stone Mountain as well as paleoIndian quarries and modern landfills associated with Soapstone Ridge. The Pine Mountain exercise uses topographic maps and SLAR imagery along with archived geologic maps to illustrate the topographic expression of structure. Additional components deal with depression era farms, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Warm Springs. Aerial photographs taken in 1938 and 1964 contrast an area whose use changed from farming to forestry.
